Elke Duvillers

Thanks to Buro Nexus, I feel as if I don’t have to do it alone.

Hi Elke, can you tell us how you ended up in construction?

When we were kids, my brother and I loved playing with Lego Technic and K’NEX. He used to build cranes, I built houses. And that always stuck with me, somehow. I still like to build and create. You know what I like most about that? Being able to create something real, something you can go to, walk past, and tell people: I created that. Even when I was still studying to become an architect, I was thinking about what I wanted to do. What is my true passion? With my degree it’s not difficult to find a job, but it’s not quite as easy to find one that you truly love. I wanted to get to know a company first before I signed my name under a permanent contract. But normally a job interview doesn’t allow for that, you have to sell yourself. Working with a project sourcing company is different, you have the chance to get to know a place first. I like that a lot and if I discover my employer is not as good a fit as I thought, I can go somewhere else.

Why did you choose to work for Buro Nexus?

Buro Nexus made me feel as if I didn’t have to do it alone. Literally. They are a kind of safety net. I spoke to a number of other consultancy firms, but that was usually through e-mail or by phone. Buro Nexus immediately started working on a personal connection, for example when I had a job interview at a potential employer: my contact Steven came with me. Such an interview is always stressful, but Steven made me feel safe. I also tend to worry too much and overthink my answers so afterwards, I never know how it went. My contact wasn’t involved in the interview itself, so he was able to give me an objective review. We chatted a bit afterwards and I really felt supported.

Do you have a funny anecdote about something that happened to you on a building site?

Of course! Most of my coworkers are men, so how do you handle all those posters and calendars with half-naked women? On April Fools, I switched all those posters for ones featuring half-naked men. And you know what happened? They didn’t notice until two days later. We had a good laugh about that. Of course, it’s not just jostling with the guys. Sometimes there are tight deadlines that require overtime. In those cases, it helps to have banked some goodwill with you colleagues. That takes time, but I can give you one good tip: cookies always work! And so does pizza.
